DIE SPRACHE DER STADT – ARCHITEKTUR ZWISCHEN NORMALISIERTEN BLICKEN UND ÄSTHETISCHER SUBJEKTIVITÄT
– English below –

Iva Ivanova studiert Architektur in Aachen.

LANGUAGE OF THE CITY – ARCHITECTURE BETWEEN NORMALIZED VIEWS AND AESTHETIC SUBJECTIVITY
The exhibition and lecture series “The Language of the City – Architecture between Normalized Views and Aesthetic Subjectivity” is dedicated to the potential for creative expression offered by the examination of architecture using contemporary digital technologies, and the social context of neoliberal enrichment economy and urban politics, which threatens to undermine this potential due to the commercialized presentation of architecture. Art itself cannot resolve such a tension between aestheticisation and economic appropriation. Through art, however, this tension can be exhibited, experienced and made discursively available to the public. The exhibition, conceived by Dr. Markus Baum, pursues this goal by assembling various pictures by different artists*, commentary lectures and DJ sets.

Elke Smith lives and works in Cologne. For her various series, she travels to places that cannot necessarily serve with the conventional over-aestheticized motifs. Among other things, she deals with the interweaving of architecture and capitalism as well as with the use and impact of architecture as an instrument of power and social selection.

Nisaan Uthayakumar is an architect that also works as 3d artist for architectural visualisation. He is interested in fictional architecture and its integration into existing urban structures. Familiar environments and utopian elements are digitally combined by him to an independent photographic by using forms materiality, light and focus.
Iva Ivanova studies architecture in Aachen. She is interested in architecture, form and materiality. During her master’s studies she has deepened her knowledge in building processes that are suitable for recycling and reuse. She sees architecture as a social and the image of architecture as an individual expression. The question about the reformulation of the concept of architecture in today’s context occupies her daily work. She finds architectural structures in the city that have grown informally particularly exciting. Through her pictures she tries to understand and express the formal language of the building.

Antoon Jungbauer (Aachen) draws multilayered pictures to counter the monotony of the prevailing style of functional and residential buildings with an atmospheric refuge. Art historical references to De Stijl or Russian Constructivism can be made, insofar as he is interested in the interplay of colors and geometric forms with regard to complex three-dimensionality. Both coincidence and intentional (spatial) design shape his painting process.
